MotoGP, Martin: “Marquez is the best in history. I didn’t lose the World Championship in Valencia”

The Spaniard, beaten by Bagnaia in the championship sprint of the premier class, analyzes the season: “Too much tension between Thailand and Qatar, I was obsessed with victory”. Furthermore, he focuses on the season finale: “The crash in Indonesia still hurts”

It can be said that the beginning and end of 2023 of Jorge Martin in MotoGP we have some analogies. TO Valenciaas to Portimaothe Spaniard had an excellent Sprint Race, only to have an accident with Marc Marquez in the long race. The two maneuvers and the responsibilities of the drivers are different, as is their path between the GPs mentioned. A special year, especially for the driver Pramacwho lost the derby Ducati against Francesco Bagnaia only in the last round. Jorge’s mind is already turned to 2024, when, however, he could also deal with Marquez, his new teammate.

esteem

The accident in Valencia between the two Spaniards ended the world championship discussion for Martin and the last race in Honda for Marquez. The Ducati standard bearer revealed an anecdote during the broadcast El Hormiguero: “When I met Marc after the race, I was surprised. He told me not to worry, that he would do the same if he fought for the World Championship. I had a clear idea: all or nothing, victory or fall. But I admit that , if they had done something like that to me, I don’t know how I would have reacted.” And then Martin adds: “Marc is the best in history. I have a good relationship with him.” However, we cannot speak of true friendship: “The only friend in MotoGP is Aleix Espargaro. We have an almost brotherly relationship. Since I was 16 he has taken great care of me. I respect him a lot, even on the track.”

regret

Martin also takes stock of 2023: “It was a complicated year. I didn’t start as I expected, but then I gained confidence and the victories came. Title? I didn’t lose the championship in the last race. A lot of things happened. this year. It was a very long journey. I was aiming for the top 3 and I achieved my goal.” But there is a race that still haunts Jorge: “It hurts me to think back to the GP in Indonesia. I was three seconds ahead and I would certainly have won the World Championship with that result. Feeling so superior at that moment, wanting to ‘humiliate’ my rivals he made me make mistakes. I learned that you can win the race by a second or two tenths, the points are the same.”

voltage

In his maturation process, Martin found a weakness to work on: “I won 13 races, but when I saw something that wasn’t right, I got too nervous. Getting angry with your team is negative, they are my family.” And, speaking of tension, Jorge mentions a particular moment: “The worst moment occurred between Thailand and Qatar. I was obsessed with victory and very angry with my team. I realized I had the wrong attitude”. A lesson to learn from in 2024.
