The relationship between Morrissey and Siouxsie Sioux was characterized by mutual respect – and then by a hard cut. Here is a review of what actually happened.
“Interlude”: Work together only once
In 1994, the former The Smith’s front man and the singer of Siouxsie and the Banshees worked together on the song “Interlude”-a nostalgic-melancholic duet that was originally sung by Timi Yuro. The release of the track was celebrated by fans: two sizes of the post-punk and Gothic Rock combines in an emotionally charged piece, who wanted to refuse to do so?
But although “Interlude” harmonized musically, it increasingly crisis the scenes. Siouxsie Sioux had clear expectations of musical coexistence, especially with regard to a common music video and the application of the song. And with these expectations they crashed at Morrissey.
If everything doesn’t go as planned
Shortly after the release there was a cut of the two. Morrissey allegedly said the filming of the planned “Interlude” clip at short notice and publicly distanced himself from the project.
Siouxsie reacted offended and, in interviews, said, among other things, that Morrissey was “impossible” and that she would never want to have something to do with him again, although this seemed to be based on mutuality. The tensions between the artists were insurmountable.
The (political) differences
However, Siouxie pressed towards “The Guardian” as if it had even come to the first video versions, because she explained: “I once did a single with Morrissey, but the video did not become good. He wanted to use a bulldog with us, and there was also a flirt with union boys and nationalism. Don’t take another dog, for example a Chihuahua? ‘ In the end he said: ‘What’s wrong with being nationalistic?’ So we had a dispute.
In Morrissey’s autobiography published in 2013V you can read about her: “At the threshold [Siouxsie]whether it is best to go to the right or left to find a taxi, and although she would like to go left, I suggest to go to the right. It’s rude of me, but she is the one who has determined the pace. ”
In the next few years, the distance between the two Brit: on the inside. The reason for this above all: Morrissey’s political statements. In particular, his statements about migration, British identity and his support for controversial parties meant that many former companions – including Siouxsie Sioux – distanced themselves from him. Sioux made it clear that she did not want to share his attitude or support. So what started as an exciting creative connection ended in a public dust.
