More than a quarter of bakeries closed during public holidays,…

Baker Hein Vandenberghe from Egem does not sit still. “I think about 5,000 mini pastries and glasses have been ordered between Christmas Day and now,” he says. Customers will pick up their orders for New Year’s Eve or New Year’s Eve on Sunday morning. The demand is high, but to keep up with it, bakers have to scrape together staff. “I am 48 years old and therefore a young baker,” says Vandenberghe. “If a baker is 56 and doesn’t have a large space, he will say that it is no longer necessary for him during the holidays.”
