More buzzing, more whistling and more blooming. The municipality of Meppel likes to see and hear that. That is why she has now come up with a plan for more biodiversity: more variation of animals and plants.
“That is not the same as nature or as green. After all, a city with only lawns or only the same trees, does not yet have high biodiversity,” the municipality writes. The reason is that fewer and fewer butterflies and birds are being seen in the municipality.
A few ambitions of the municipality are to set up at least 30 percent with green or water in the built -up area, in the outlying area that must be at least 10 percent. She also wants to manage at least 80 percent of the verges ecologically. Now 8 percent of the verges are being ecologically managed. It means that these verges are not mowed for a quarter, so that there is a habitat for animals that wants to winter there.
The desire for more biodiversity can be at stake due to the expansion of Meppel. For example, there is busy construction and expanded in the Nieuwveense Landen district and there are also plans for around 1,000 homes in Noordpoort.
That is why the municipality wants more nature -inclusive buildings, with, for example, green roofs or nest boxes for birds in facades or walls. The municipality also sees an opportunity to clean old walls, for example with old bridges over water, less often. This way, more moss can grow on the walls where insects can live in again.
Another danger of animals are busy roads. Due to the A32 and A28 highways and the provincial roads, many buns, hares, otters, frogs, salamanders and other animals are killed. That is why we look at the construction of fauna passages.
For example, there are many measures that the municipality suggests. It is not only about municipal land, but also for, for example, gardens of residents or agricultural land of farmers. The cooperation with residents, entrepreneurs, farmers, but also the province, water board and nature organizations is needed to implement plans. For residents and entrepreneurs, the municipality wants to provide information about the nature -inclusive design of a garden or subsidize a green roof.
The first measures must already be taken this year. From next year, activities will be organized for residents.
