More burglaries during carnival: you can do this | 1Limburg

Limburgers who celebrate carnival must take active burglars into account. Insurer Interpolis predicts a sharp increase in burglaries this weekend.

But what can you do then?

Make your home livable
According to Mireille van den Boom of Interpolis, it is certainly not necessary to stay at home. According to her, you can take some measures. “Make sure your house looks livable, as if someone is at home. Leave the lights and the radio on, make sure your windows and doors are locked and don’t tidy up too much. For example, leave glasses on the table.” According to Van den Boom, it is also important to always remain alert and to address people.

Corona
During the corona pandemic, when everyone was at home more, Interpolis saw the number of burglaries decrease by 40 percent. “But since week 5, so since the relaxation, we have seen an increase of 65 percent again.”

Carnival 2020
Van den Boom says that in 2020 the insurer saw that many burglaries took place in Heerlen in particular during the carnival. “The number of burglaries there was 30 percent higher than at other times.” Maastricht was in second place, followed by Venray.

During the day
While some people still think that burglars are mainly active at night, according to Van den Boom, that is no longer the case. “Not only at carnival, but all year round, we mainly see burglars striking during the day.”
