Moluccan foundation and school community work together for better education

The Vincent van Gogh school community in Assen and the Moluccan Heka Leka foundation are going to work together. They signed a statement today with the aim of improving education in the Moluccas.

A delegation from the Moluccan foundation was at the Lriks location today to sign the agreement. “We are extremely honored with this collaboration”, says Alice Vellinga board chairman of the school community.

The project is supported by an Asser working group. Antis Marijanan from the Moluccan community has been in talks with the school community for several years to take education on the archipelago to a higher level. “We are very happy that we have finally taken this step,” says Marijanan. “Assen is a municipality with a large number of Moluccan inhabitants. And there are many students with a Moluccan background at school here.”

One of the activities on the program is a charity campaign at Christmas. A Moluccan week with food, music and dance is also on the list of ideas. In the near future, teachers from the school will determine together with Heka Leka what the collaboration will look like.

The purpose of the agreement must in any case be reciprocal. “In this way, Asser students not only contribute to the educational level in the Moluccas, but the students themselves also learn about Moluccan history and culture,” explains Marijanan. He hopes that eventually more schools in Assen will follow.
