Moluccan exhibition Menyala attracts considerably more visitors than expected

More than 54,000 people visited the exhibition, which closed this weekend Menyala – the extraordinary history of the Moluccans in Drenthe. That is almost double the number of visitors that the Drents Museum expected in advance.

The exhibition was created through a collaboration between the museum in Assen and a group of seven young Moluccans. A new formula that the museum wants to use more often in the future.

“If you see documentaries or read books about the Moluccans, you often see the same story. We went looking for smaller stories, different stories. I think we have succeeded in that mission,” says curator Jan van Zijverden.

The museum has noticed that this method of exhibiting works from the many notes with messages that visitors left at the exhibition about the Moluccans. According to the curator, many of them wrote that they had gained new insights during their visit Menyala.
