The Italian fashion designer Giorgio Armani will be buried this Monday near his birthplace Piacenza in the north of the country.
The funeral takes place in a small circle, only with family, friend: inside and the closest employees: inside. Armani will find his last rest in the cemetery of the small community of Rivalta, about an hour’s drive from Milan. At the headquarters of the Armani Group in Milan, where he had regularly showed his new collections for many years, more than 6,000 people bowed to the coffin. The coffin is still in the Teatro Armani until Sunday evening, where he almost always personally presented his big fashion shows. For the first time, he was no longer there this summer. The fashion designer only lived a few houses away, in one of the most elegant streets in the city of the million in northern Italy. He had founded his group exactly 50 years ago.
A lot of applause for coffin on arrival
An exhibition on his life’s work is scheduled to begin in Milan this month. He actually wanted to be there at the opening. Armani had spent the summer in one of his villas in Saint-Tropez on the French Côte d’Azur. He announced his comeback for this month – but nothing came of it.
The coffin was brought into the building with a corpse car in the morning. There was a lot of applause from the waiting amount. The burial should take place in the small circle on Monday. Armani died on Thursday after health had been troubled by him for a few months. In June and July he had to cancel the participation in his views.
Hundreds of paper lanterns in darkened space
The hall in which the coffin stands is darkened. It is enlightened by several hundred paper lanterns. Armani was one of the most important fashion designers in the world for decades. After the first years in which he worked for other houses, he founded the Giorgio Armani Spa in the mid -1970s with his partner Sergio Galeotti. That was the nucleus of a group that is worth many billions today.
Testament is to be opened this month
The money initially came through fashion, then also through accessories, perfumes and hotels. After Galeotti’s early death in 1985, the Armani company belonged alone. How the group will continue is not yet known. The fashion designer is said to have left plans for his successor. According to Italian media reports, his will is to be opened within 14 days after the funeral.
