Mockery and malice poured out over Lambrecht after the New Year’s video

With a video message at the turn of the year, Federal Defense Minister Christine Lambrecht (SPD) caused ridicule and malice.

Inappropriate in terms of content and stylistically unsuccessful – that was the criticism in social media on Monday, which was also joined by several federal politicians in the Union. The video on the Instagram internet service shows Lambrecht on New Year’s Eve on a street in Berlin. Her thanks and wishes to the servicewomen and men can hardly be understood, however, because they are drowned out by the noise of cannon fire.

In view of the war in Ukraine, it was precisely this background noise that caused criticism. Lambrecht’s ministry did not want to rate the video or the criticism on Monday.

Lambrecht spoke on her private Instagram channel, said a ministry spokesman. “As far as I know, no official resources have been used,” he added. It is not the ministry’s job to comment on the minister’s appearance.

Union politicians took the video as an opportunity to confirm doubts about the suitability of the minister. Ex-Union Chancellor candidate Armin Laschet (CDU) pointed out on Twitter that Lambrecht’s Instagram appearance also caused astonishment abroad. “Is the chancellor completely indifferent to Germany’s impact in Europe and the world?” he wrote.

The CSU defense expert Florian Hahn wrote: “This video speaks for itself. What an embarrassment, what a miscast.”

In the video, Lambrecht says: “A war is raging in the middle of Europe.” She then goes on to say that the development for her was associated with many impressions and encounters “with interesting and great people”. You celebrate the turn of the year with family and friends.
