MLS: Portland Timbers name Phil Neville as new coach

Second MLS station after Inter Miami

New task for Phil Neville: The ex-professional has been appointed coach of the Portland Timbers for the upcoming Major League Soccer season. The 46-year-old signed a contract with the 2015 champions until 2026. Neville most recently served as an assistant with the Canadian national team after he left Inter Miami last summer as bottom of the table in the Eastern Conference and with a points average of 1.32 in 90 Had to take games. Portland will be his second stop at an MLS club.

“I’m really looking forward to the challenge ahead,” said the former player from Manchester United, among others. “From the first moment I met the staff, I knew this was the right opportunity for me, the right club for me and the right city for me.”

Timbers General Manager Ned Grabavoy said of Miles Joseph’s successor: “Phil’s character makes him the right person to lead the team forward as we continue to transform the roster to return to sustained success. His leadership qualities, diverse coaching experience and ambition to develop make him an excellent choice for our team in Portland.”
