In a unique season, the small club Mjällby AIF is crowned Swedish football champions early. How did the soccer dwarf manage to do that?
From the provinces to the top: Mjällby AIF has crowned its football fairytale and won the Swedish championship for the first time. The club from the small village, which according to the latest data has 1,379 inhabitants, won 2-0 (2-0) at IKF Göteborg on Monday evening and is unassailable at the top of the Swedish Allsvenskan with three match days before the end of the season.
The team completed an almost flawless season, just like record champions Malmö FF in previous years. The club had ultimately won the title in eight of the last twelve rounds of games.
This is now paying off: After a unique season with only one defeat so far, the lead over Stockholm’s pursuer Hammarby in second place is now a whopping eleven points, and last year’s champion Malmö in fourth place is even 21 points. And that, even though Mjällby currently only has the ninth highest market value of all 16 Allsvenskan teams, according to “transfermarkt.de”.
Mjällby impressed with unity, clever squad planning and stable club management. Head coach Anders Torstensson’s team does not rely on bigger stars and does not have wealthy investors behind it.
For Mjällby AIF it is the first national championship title in the club’s 86-year history. The club is named after the 1,400-person town of Mjällby, but plays its home games in the similarly small neighboring community of Hällevik.
