A Tragic Incident UnfoldsItalian Family Minister’s Husband Disappears After Jumping into Lago di Vico

A tragic event leads to a desperate search.
For Italy’s Family Minister Eugenia Maria Roccella, a boat trip on Lago di Vico turned into a nightmare when her husband, Luigi Cavallari, vanished before her eyes. Emergency crews have since been diving into the chilly waters, but hopes for his survival are fading.

A Shocking Turn of Events

What was meant to be a brief respite from the summer heat turned disastrous. On the afternoon of June 27, Luigi Cavallari, aged 84, jumped off a rental boat into Lago di Vico in the Lazio region to cool off. Initially, he resurfaced but was only able to communicate that he didn’t feel well.

Tragically, Cavallari was unable to return to the boat. Minister Roccella desperately tried to grasp her husband, but the boat was not anchored and drifted away. Helplessly, she watched as her husband sank beneath the water’s surface and immediately called for help.

Race Against Time in the Search

Since the incident, a significant search operation has been underway. The fire department, Carabinieri, and Guardia di Finanza have been using divers, sonar technology, underwater robots, drones, and helicopters in the search. However, the conditions are challenging; visibility is reportedly near zero, even in shallow waters, and the temperatures plunge dangerously with depth, according to Andrea Caputo, the deputy prefect of Viterbo.

Authorities are now concerned that Cavallari may have suffered from hypothermia. The water in the lake is unusually cold, even in summer, heightening fears that strong currents may have swept him away.

Family in Perilous Wait

Minister Roccella, along with their two children, is anxiously waiting for news at their family home in Viterbo. Just this past March, the couple celebrated their golden wedding anniversary. Roccella has expressed deep affection for her husband, stating, “I met him when I was eighteen, and we have never been apart since.”

Public Reaction and Controversies

Amidst the ongoing search, social media has erupted with mixed reactions. Many users make derogatory comments, pointing out that significant resources are being allocated for a minister’s spouse. Some even argue that average citizens wouldn’t receive such extensive attention. Ignazio La Russa, the Italian Senate President, has vehemently condemned these criticisms.

As of now, two days into the search, there is still no sign of Luigi Cavallari. According to Italian authorities, the hope of finding him alive continues to diminish.
