Mislintat about VfB professional Sosa: “When Cucurella changes, the market gets going”

Stuttgart still with a transfer minus

VfB sports director Sven Mislintat has so far spent more on newcomers this summer than he has earned on departures: the bottom line is a transfer minus of 6.4 million euros. The Swabians could make this balance positive by selling one of their three most valuable players. Mislintat sees Borna Sosa (24) in particular as a catalyst that could accelerate the departure of the left-back.

“This market hasn’t really taken off yet. No jigsaw piece left-back has changed since then. I think a big issue could be that if Cucurella changes, that position in the European market will take off,” Mislintat told Sky. If Marc Cucurella (23), who is particularly courted by Manchester City, should leave Brighton & Hove Albion, the piece of the puzzle that would ensure movement in Sosa’s position falls.

According to reports, the “Seagulls” want to keep the Spaniard and should only be ready to talk from the equivalent of 58 million euros.

Sosa has been one of the best left-backs in the Bundesliga in the past two seasons, boasting 18 assists and increasing his market value from 2 million to 23 million euros. “You have to see what happens. But there, too, it was communicated very clearly: Borna says that if nothing comes up that suits everyone, then I’ll be a full-on VfB footballer, want to qualify for the World Cup squad and give everything for my club,” said Mislintat about the Croatians.

The situation is similar with center forward Sasa Kalajdzic (25), but without the prospect of the World Cup. “We are in excellent discussions with Sasa about his situation. And for me it’s always important when they’re there that they give their all. And he does that, you can see that in every training session,” the sports director praises the Austrian, for whom VfB has still not received any offers. There are currently more than a dozen rumors in the rumor mill about Stuttgart’s most valuable footballer, whose contract expires in 2023 and for whom, according to his own statement, an extension is “definitely an option”.

Orel Mangala (24), who is the third most valuable player in the squad with a market value of 15 million euros, is under contract until 2024. “There, too, it is the case that one or two conversations have already been held. But I don’t see any way to finalize it at the moment and I don’t see that happening either, because it doesn’t do justice to its performance,” reveals Mislintat. “It’s the case that we have a lot of really good players behind us in central midfield who are presenting themselves excellently. And that’s why we have to see what’s going on there. But fundamentally, it is always our aim to prefer to keep boys.”
