Mirani’s headers make the difference for FC Volendam against Cambuur

FC Volendam managed to keep the three points in-house. This time SC Cambuur went home empty handed. Two goals from Damon Mirani’s head took care of the full spoils tonight: 2-0.

The initiative was in the initial phase at FC Volendam. For example, club top scorer Daryl van Mieghem had an opportunity within a minute, but he was just too late. Moments later, Damon Mirani and Henk Veerman missed a tight free kick from Carel Eiting. The Frisians then came out of their shells and became dangerous through Jamie Jacobs, Mees Hoedemakers and Mimoun Mahi.

Early bills

It was sour that Gaetano Oristanio and Brian Plat had to be replaced early due to injuries. Mirani scored the opening goal almost out of the blue. He fumbled a corner from Eiting behind goalkeeper Robbin Ruiter: 1-0. Just before the break, Floris Smand had a free header, which went just wide.

Robert Mühren was Wim Jonk’s third substitution at halftime. He replaced Veerman. The Volendam team came out of the dressing room energetically, because Derry John Murkin quickly got a shooting opportunity. A few minutes later, Mühren had the chance of 2-0 and failed face to face with Ruiter. Van Mieghem then thought to double the score, but Mühren turned out to be just offside during that attack. Eiting found Ruiter again a little later on his way. In between, FC Volendam keeper Filip Stankovic was able to catch two headers easily.

In the final phase, Mühren again escaped the Frisian defense. This time he shot the ball into the side net. Franco Antonucci tried to outwit Ruiter with a nice ball from a distance, but Ruiter saved. Cambuur played little offensively, although the team of coach Sjors Ultee remained due to the minimal difference in the game. In the 90th minute, Mirani put an end to that illusion with his second header of the evening.

Because of the victory, Volendam rises to a shared thirteenth place with Vitesse. RKC will be the opponent in two weeks. The difference with the playoff spot sixteen is five points, but FC Emmen will play against sc Heerenveen tomorrow evening.
