Minute of silence in Mainz for the deceased functionary Braun

Mainz (dpa) – Before the Bundesliga catch-up game FSV Mainz 05 against Borussia Dortmund, there was a minute’s silence in the stadium for the former football official Egidius Braun.

The former president of the German Football Association died on Wednesday night at the age of 97. Players, officials and the fans paused on Wednesday evening before the game started with a little delay.

Braun began his official career in football as president of the Mittelrhein Association in 1973 at the age of 48. In 1977 he became treasurer of the DFB. After 15 years in office, he rose to become the eighth president of the football association with the most members in the world. He remained DFB boss until April 28, 2001.

As usual, the song “You’ll never walk alone” was played in the Mainz stadium before the minute’s silence. This time, due to the Russian invasion of Ukraine, supporters of both clubs showed blue and yellow flags of Ukraine, which were distributed in advance to the audience.
