Millions of barrels of oil were transported through the Strait of Hormuz this weekend, Bloomberg news agency reports based on shipping data. This also happened after Iran claimed to have closed the waterway again.

Three heavily loaded oil tankers, with a combined shipping capacity of 6 million barrels, sent signals Saturday as they transited the Strait of Hormuz along a route along the coast of Oman, according to Bloomberg.

One of those ships resumed sending automatic signals on Sunday morning after reaching the Gulf of Oman.

The United States and Iran present different versions on the status of the important strait. The Iranian armed forces announced on Saturday that the strait would be closed again to allow attacks on Lebanon. US Vice President JD Vance said there are no indications that Iran is closing the strait again.

Maritime organizations warned this week about the safety of passage through the waterway. For example, there are concerns about the presence of sea mines and crowds in the narrow strait, where about 120 ships per day passed through before the war broke out. Many shipping companies are still waiting for more details and safety guarantees before using the Strait of Hormuz again.

Earlier this week, the blockade of the Strait of Hormuz was lifted, after the strait had been blocked for months. The gradual reopening was part of the previously concluded preliminary agreement between the US and Iran. This also caused oil prices to drop sharply.
