After months of negotiations, the goalkeeper and the Rossoneri are close to an agreement for the renewal: Allegri’s trust, the support of the locker room and a new proposal from the club

January 7 – 9.25am – MILAN

The very long disturbance, it seems, is giving way to a sky that is turning pink. The definitive white smoke is not yet there but the dialogue between Maignan and Milan on the contract renewal in the last few hours would be moving decidedly towards the good. Translated: the goalkeeper would have convinced himself that continuing his relationship with the Devil is the best solution for his career at the moment (under certain economic conditions, obviously).

what has changed

In fact, the crux of the issue revolves above all around this. That is, Mike’s will, until a few weeks ago he had no intention of continuing with the Rossoneri due to the total cooling of relations with the management after the lack of agreement a year ago, when the club had revised the first renewal proposal downwards. A situation that had stiffened – euphemism – Maignan, at that point inclined to reach the deadline (2026) and say goodbye to the Devil by freeing himself for free. There were long months in which the percentage of reaching an agreement was practically zero, also because the parties had interrupted the dialogue. Then several things happened, and the inertia of the situation began to change.

the role of max

What things? A fundamental component was certainly the role of Allegri. Who first shielded Mike – to the best of his ability – in the summer, and then behind the scenes always conveyed great trust and esteem to him. Even his teammates definitely didn’t shy away: real public appeals arrived – Gabbia, Rabiot -, as well as productive reflections in the closed locker room. Also worth highlighting is the role of the new coach Filippi, a figure much appreciated by the Frenchman, and not by chance mentioned several times by Allegri and the goalkeeper himself. The rest was done first by the person directly involved, with performances returning to the level of the best Maignan; and then Milan, who restarted the dialogue by submitting a third renewal proposal which in practice returned to the parameters of the first offer. That is, an economic adjustment which, including bonuses, would lead to the Frenchman being the highest paid in the squad together with Leao (7 million).

the thaw

In recent times, in fact, they have been talking about a player who is certainly more willing to evaluate the offer from via Aldo Rossi, a vital factor in a month where those whose contracts are expiring can start to reach agreements with other clubs. Furthermore, Maignan had already shown interest in the sirens of the Premier League: in the summer he had in fact said yes to Chelsea, and the transfer did not materialize only due to the lack of agreement between the clubs. The rest, as mentioned, was then done by Allegri and Mike had established a sort of gentlemen’s agreement with Milan: forward with the utmost professionalism until the end of the season, regardless of the final scenario. Now that scenario takes on the contours of trust and concrete hope.
