The FIGC sanctions the former AC Milan coach, who will pay the amount due from his own pocket, for the comments about La Penna after the match against Atalanta
Memories of Milan chase Paulo Fonseca. The former Rossoneri coach still spends a lot of time in Italy and has recently been fined for his words to journalists at the end of Atalanta-Milan on 6 December. Fonseca was furious at De Ketelaere’s goal, scored by jumping on Theo Hernandez, a play that the Portuguese has always considered a foul. Hence his words: “Being a referee is a difficult job and I know it, but I’m tired of always seeing the same things. There is no respect towards Milan”. And on La Penna: “I was afraid of it. He was at the VAR in Atalanta-Udinese and you saw what happened in that match.” That time – it was November 10th – a penalty was not awarded against Udinese due to a clear handball by Hien. Nani, head of Udinese’s technical area, blurted out: “I can also understand the referee who was a bit covered, but what about the VAR?”.
FONSECA PAY
—
Fonseca and Milan terminated their working relationship on December 30 with his dismissal after the match against Roma. So who will pay the 10,000 euro fine? Fonseca will pay personally.

This is the press release from the FIGC: “Following the plea agreement reached by the parties (pursuant to art. 126 CGS), the former AC Milan coach Paulo Fonseca was sanctioned with a fine of 10,000 euros. By way of strict liability also the Rossoneri club was sanctioned with a fine of 5,000 euros.” This last amount will obviously be paid by the club. The coach was sanctioned for having “expressed, during the usual post-match interviews granted to the press, judgments detrimental to his own prestige and reputation, both of the referee of the match, Federico La Penna, and, for the effect and more in general, of the arbitral institution as a whole”.
