Mikey (20) found his ice cream truck on Marktplaats and is now standing with it at the Noord Aa: ‘I think it’s so beautiful’

As a child he often visited the beach of the Noord Aa with his mother or with friends. Today he has his own ice cream truck. “On sunny days it is very busy.”

Mikey van der Zalm (20) lives in Oosterheem. For some time he worked for Bram Ladaga in Gouda. “There is an ice cream parlor around the corner where there are always rows of people. During a hot working day I often thought it’s better to sell ice cream now than work with hot oil.”

Belgian Marketplace

This is where Mikey got the idea to become an ice cream seller. “I searched Marktplaats for ice cream carts. I suddenly saw this car on the Belgian website. The previous owner had nothing to do with social media. If he had put this beautiful cart on it, it would be gone in no time. I was lucky enough to discover the ad. We went to see and I was sold.” Mikey bought the ice cream truck with his savings and drove it to Zoetermeer.

I quickly remove bird droppings

Mikey didn’t have to do much about the ice cream truck. “It’s an original 30-year-old ice cream truck from England,” he says. “I did buy a new battery and changed the interior a bit.” He left the text ‘Zane (ice cream) by the sea’ and tapped a cash register. There are lights in the ice cream cones at the front of the bus and there is an electric bell in the car. “Everyone can hear through the speakers that I’m coming. Everyone calls me a bitch exactly because I’m constantly working with my cloth. It just has to be neat, I quickly remove any bird droppings.”

Prefer to bake fries too

Raspberries, strawberries, vanilla and soon also Smurf ice cream. Mikey sells both organic ice cream from the farmer and Italian ice cream. “But also prepackaged ice cream, drinks, candy and chips,” he adds. “Actually, I would also like to bake fries in it. I think this works well on hot days.” Mikey Gelato’s ice creams are in great demand with visitors to the Noord Aa. “People react positively to the pieces of fruit and chocolate in the ice cream and the crunchy cones. I want to offer quality, that’s important to me.”

After the summer in home care

Sometimes acquaintances stop by to see Mikey on the beach in Zoetermeer. “My friends are quite surprised that I have my own ice cream truck. How did you manage that again? then they ask. But I am very proud of my blue car, it is beautiful.” Once the ice cream season is over, his ice cream truck goes into storage. “I want to start working in home care,” Mikey says. “Making it fun, together with the elderly. My mother did too. I think I got it from her.” After the summer we will definitely see Mikey Gelato again on the beach in Zoetermeer, he promised.
