Microsoft integrates ChatGPT into its Bing search engine

With a new search engine strategy, Microsoft could become dangerous to its opponent Google. The fact that founders Sergey Brin and Larry Page were brought back on board shows just how much pressure the AI-supported search is putting on Google. A real competition for the best AI search could be the result.

Microsoft has not yet given up its own search engine, Bing. For years, the company has been trying to attract more users – but they usually only use Bing to find another search engine. No wonder then that the most searched term is “Google”. But Microsoft is trying to use a new method to challenge its competitor Google for the pioneering position.

New Bing search to make questions more natural

Open.ai, the company behind ChatGPT, and Microsoft have had an exclusive agreement since 2019. The investment is one billion US dollars (USD) and allows Open.ai to use Microsoft Azure servers to develop AI-powered tools such as ChatGPT and Dall-e. In January, the news site reported “the information“that Microsoft is planning to integrate the chatbot ChatGPT into its search engine Bing. The company is expected to announce the new search feature soon.

Now the first users are reporting that a newly designed website with a chat function is appearing instead of the normal search bar. This prompts users to “ask everything”. A card will appear underneath with the text: “The new Bing. Ask real questions. Get complete answers.”

This is where you will find content from Twitter

In order to interact with or display content from social networks, we need your consent.

Several users wrote on Twitter that the new interface with chatbot function was suddenly there, but also disappeared again very quickly. One user could even ask the new Bing search which version of ChatGPT it is accessing and the AI replied: “If you use the chat function in Bing, you are probably using ChatGPT 3.5, unless Microsoft has already integrated ChatGPT 4 .” The search already gives an insight into the future possibilities of AI integration. Because version 3.5 of the chatbot is still based on an older data set and cannot answer questions about current events. For Bing, Microsoft could therefore use a newer version of ChatGPT that has an active connection to the Internet.

It is unclear whether the brief availability of the new Bing search is an error or a preliminary test run. Microsoft does not want to comment on the facts of the matter when asked by TECHBOOK.

ChatGPT in Bing competes with Google

After Open.ai released ChatGPT for testing, it racked up a million users in just five days (source: extra). For comparison, it took Netflix three and a half years to reach that many users, compared to ten months for Facebook. It quickly turned out that the AI can answer many questions that are otherwise entered in the Google search faster and more precisely.

Now Microsoft has a home advantage because the company can already use ChatGPT for its Bing search engine. By connecting to the Internet to answer current-related questions, the company could suddenly pose a threat to Google. That’s why even founders Larry Page and Sergey Brin, who left active roles at Google in 2019, are back at the headquarters in Mountain View, California. They should help to focus Google’s AI strategy. On February 8th, the company wants new AI-supported functions for the search engine in one YouTube live stream introduce.
