Mick Jagger can’t wait to get back on stage with the Rolling Stones. In an interview with BBC Radio 2 alongside Ronnie Wood, Jagger confirmed that the band definitely plans to tour again in the future.

“I would love to tour,” Jagger said. “I can barely wait for it.” To temper expectations, he added: “I don’t think it will happen this year. But hopefully as soon as possible.”

Jagger’s statement comes after the band apparently buried plans last year for a stadium tour of the UK and Europe, scheduled for 2026. It was reported in January last year that the group had received several offers for summer concerts, but rejected them due to logistical issues surrounding venues and travel arrangements, as well as pre-existing commitments.

New music, new tour

The Rolling Stones last toured in 2024 in support of their 2023 album “Hackney Diamonds,” including 20 concerts in North America. The tour was a gigantic production: after the album launch in London and a pop-up concert in New York City, more than 60 songs from the band’s catalog were rehearsed.

The band is now preparing to release a new album: “Foreign Tongues” will be released on July 10th. It was recorded at Metropolis Studios in West London with producer Andrew Watt, who had previously supervised “Hackney Diamonds”. In addition to Jagger, Keith Richards and Wood, there are bassist Darryl Jones, keyboardist Matt Clifford and drummer Steve Jordan. The album also features a contribution from late Rolling Stones drummer Charlie Watts, recorded in one of his final sessions before his death in 2021. Guest musicians include Steve Winwood, Paul McCartney, The Cure frontman Robert Smith and Red Hot Chili Peppers drummer Chad Smith.

In the BBC Radio 2 interview, Jagger described how the collaboration with Robert Smith came about by chance – at an industry event.

Random encounters, big co-ops

“He was standing with his back to me in this long robe, and when he turned around he was covered in lipstick,” Jagger said. “And I said, ‘You’re Robert Smith from The Cure.’ He said, ‘Yeah, we never met.’ And I said, ‘While you’re here, you’d better record something.’ That’s how co-ops work sometimes.”

Of McCartney, he said: “We had never played together before. I had sung with him before, but we had never picked up an instrument together. That was very exciting. He learned incredibly quickly.”
