The Olympic Games will take place in Italy in two months. Michelle Gisin thought she had great chances, but now she has to worry.
The Swiss alpine skier Michelle Gisin suffered injuries to her right wrist, left knee and cervical spine during her serious training fall during the World Cup downhill in St. Moritz. The Swiss Ski Association announced this on Thursday afternoon.
The accident occurred in difficult visibility conditions on the “Corviglia” route. The two-time Olympic champion was taken to a local clinic by helicopter after her fall. From there, according to the ski association, she was transported to the Hirslanden clinic in Zurich. She had to undergo surgery on her cervical spine there on Thursday. “Michelle Gisin is doing well given the circumstances, the woman from Obwalden can move her arms and legs normally,” says the association statement. Further examinations and the wrist and knee could only be carried out “after the cervical spine has been stabilized”.
On Thursday, Gisin was in second practice when she lost control in the lower section of the track. Under cloudy skies and low light, she lost control and slipped through a safety net before coming to rest in front of another net. Lindsey Vonn, who started directly after Gisin, had to abort her trip due to the incident.
The day before, Vonn had set the fastest time in the first training session. Swiss ski racers are currently badly affected by injuries. Lara Gut-Behrami and Corinne Suter, both Olympic champions, are already missing from the team. Gut-Behrami is out for the rest of the season after a training crash in November, while Suter is expected back in January after an accident in early December.
