FC Bayern is repositioning itself at the management level of its youth division. A former Bundesliga coach takes over the management of the academy.
Former Bundesliga coach Michael Wiesinger will be the new sporting director at the FC Bayern Campus. The German record champions announced on Saturday that the 53-year-old would be joining Munich on May 1st. He is supposed to take over the management of the youth department from Markus Weinzierl, whose contract with Bayern expires in the summer. Most recently, Wiesinger was responsible for the youth department at 1. FC Nürnberg.
Bayern’s director of youth development Jochen Sauer described the new academy boss as “an experienced young manager” in the club’s announcement. Wiesinger worked successfully in Nuremberg for many years. “We are convinced that with him we will be even better positioned to meet the challenges of the future than we are now,” continued Sauer.
Wiesinger himself spoke of a “wonderful time” he had at the “club”. “Now I’m really looking forward to the exciting task of being responsible for talent development at one of the biggest clubs in the world,” explained the former midfielder.
For the Burghausen native, his commitment to FC Bayern is also a return to his old place of work. As a professional he played for the club between 1999 and 2001. He then played for Bayern’s arch-rivals 1860 Munich, among others. Wiesinger spent the longest period of his professional career at 1. FC Nürnberg (1993 to 1999).
