Darter Michael van Gerwen has qualified for the semi-finals of the World Grand Prix in Leicester. The darts player from Vlijmen defeated the Englishman Chris Dobey in four sets in the quarterfinals: 3-1.
‘Mighty Mike’ won the first set against Dobey, but saw his opponent level in the second set. Dobey threw out at 2-2 in legs 122 and the score was tied again.
The Dutchman convincingly won the third set and won the leg that Dobey had started in the fourth set at 1-1. In the next leg, Van Gerwen finished it off by throwing out 105.
Van Gerwen will face world champion Peter Wright in the semifinals. The Scot won in his quarterfinals 3-2 in sets against the Belgian Dimitri Van den Bergh. The other semi-final is between Gerwyn Price from Wales and the Englishman Nathan Aspinall.
The World Grand Prix is one of the major tournaments of the professional association PDC, with 600,000 British pounds (almost 700,000 euros) in the prize pool. Van Gerwen has already won the tournament five times.
