Michael Mann announces “Heat 2” as his next film

At the Contenders event In London, director Michael Mann announced that his next film would be the novel adaptation of “Heat 2”. He said, “Yes. Meg Gardiner and I wrote the novel ‘Heat 2’, which came out while we were filming ‘Ferrari’. It went very well. I plan to shoot it next.”

At the beginning of 2023 there was already speculation as to whether Adam Driver would play the young Neil McCauley in a film adaptation of “Heat 2”. In the first “Heat” film, the role was played by Robert DeNiro. Driver previously starred in Mann’s “Ferrari,” which will be released in theaters this year.

When asked about the cast, Michael Mann laughed and explained: “Maybe. We’re not talking about it yet. […] We have the same work ethic – and it’s pretty intense. We like each other and we had a great time collaborating artistically.”

“Heat 2” will be a sequel as well as a prequel to the first part. It takes place in the years before the big crime saga in LA and deals with what happens to the survivors after the crisis. The plot takes readers and soon viewers back to Chicago in 1988. McCauley, Shiherlis and their crew are up to mischief on the West Coast, on the border between the USA and Mexico and in Chicago. At the same time, Hanna has his first experiences as a Chicago police star in pursuit of an extremely violent gang of burglars.

Michael Mann’s current work “Ferrari” was already presented at the Venice Film Festival and will be released in US cinemas on Christmas Day. It tells the story of Enzo Ferrari’s obsession with winning the Mille Miglia, a treacherous 1,000-mile race across Italy, but also details his complicated personal life with two women.
