Michael Goolaerts (23) died five years ago. His parents talk for the first time: “The last I saw of him is how he was laughing in the race”

“See you later.” And he got a slap on the cyclist’s ass from his mother. It was Sunday, April 8, 2018 and Michael Goolaerts rode his first Paris-Roubaix. That morning at the start he spoke his last words to his parents. The young man died on the second cobblestone section of the race, from a sudden cardiac arrest. Never before did his parents speak of that fateful day. Until now, five years later. “I didn’t care about his results, as long as he came home in one piece.”
