Claudia Sheinbaum gets the coveted ticket with the number 001, but the president doesn’t want to use it. It is still unclear who the ticket will go to.
Mexico’s President Claudia Sheinbaum wants to give away her ticket to the opening game of next year’s World Cup in Mexico City. The ticket with the number 001, which entitles you to the game on June 11th at the Aztec Stadium in Mexico City, will go to a football-loving young woman who cannot financially afford the visit. Sheinbaum said this at a press conference.
It is still unclear how the recipient will be selected. “We’re still thinking about how we choose the woman who gets the ticket,” said Sheinbaum, who became the first woman elected in the June 2024 presidential election.
Attending the opening game is unaffordable for many. According to the British portal “The Athletic”, the most expensive ticket costs around 1,825 US dollars. Even the cheapest price category starts at around 370 US dollars – which corresponds to around 320 euros. For comparison: The legal minimum wage in Mexico is currently around 8,364 pesos per month, the equivalent of around 455 US dollars.
The 2026 World Cup will be held in Mexico, Canada and the USA, and 48 teams will compete for the first time. The major event will last more than five weeks until the final on July 19th in East Rutherford near New York.
