President Claudia Sheinbaum of Mexico has to maneuver. On the one hand, she struggles with Donald Trump and his repeated threats to send American soldiers to Mexico to eliminate the drug cartels. On the other hand, there is her patriotic-nationalist support base who, like her mentor – the left-populist former president and ruling party ideologue Andrés Manuel López Obrador (AMLO) – attaches great importance to national sovereignty.
