Kazuaki Kanetoyo, known in the Japanese metal scene as “Kirz Hammett” and part of the Metallica tribute band Hattallica, died on April 26, 2026 at the age of 46. Metallica guitarist Kirk Hammett paid tribute to the musician with a statement on social media.
“It is with a heavy heart that we say goodbye to Kazuaki Kanetoyo aka Kirz Hammett. A talented musician, always friendly, always in a good mood. Now he is shredding among the stars,” writes Hammett – and posts a picture of the two.
Kirz Hammett: Band makes a statement
Hattallica announced the death of their colleague in an official statement signed by bandmate James Hirofield. Kanetoyo was diagnosed with stage IV nasal cavity cancer last year. After an initial remission, doctors discovered meningeal sowing, an infection of the meninges, at the beginning of 2026. His condition suddenly deteriorated and he died surrounded by his family. “His indomitable spirit and deep passion for Metallica were the driving force behind Hattallica,” the statement said. “The soulful sound of his guitar and the legacy he leaves behind will stay with us forever.”
The quartet from Yokohama has existed since December 2002 and claims to be a tribute band recognized by Metallica’s Metclub fan club. Between 2007 and 2015, the group played the Summer Sonic Festival for nine consecutive years, selling out their first overseas show in London in 2011, according to their statement Band bio. In November 2022, Hattallica said it played Metallica’s then-brand new song “Lux Æterna” live before the original itself performed it on stage.
