Meta, which owns Facebook, is planning a new text-centric social media platform, the purpose of which would be to supplant Twitter as the world’s leading discussion platform. The news agencies Reuters and AFP report on the topic.

Meta confirmed on Friday that it is working on a new platform. The company announced via email that it was “exploring” the possibility of establishing a “decentralized social network that shares text updates”.

Twitter has been struggling since billionaire Elon Musk bought the platform in October.

However, Twitter has no direct competitors. Among others, the world’s leading politicians are still on the platform.

Facebook does not interest young people

According to media reports, Meta’s new application would use technology that would enable it to be used together with other platforms such as the smaller Mastodon. The application designed by Meta would resemble Mastodon in its distributed structure.

In December, Musk briefly banned Twitter users from sharing links to other social media platforms such as Facebook, Instagram and Mastodon, AFP reminds.

Meta’s biggest platform, Facebook, has had a hard time finding young users. Instagram, owned by Meta, also has to struggle seriously against the Chinese Tiktok.
