After numerous cancellations and postponements due to the corona pandemic, the star-studded Met Gala is to take place again this year on its traditional date on the first Monday in May. The gala is planned for May 2, said Max Hollein, the Austrian director of the Metropolitan Museum, at a press conference on Tuesday.

Often referred to as the “Party of the Year,” the Met Ball is an annual fundraiser for the Metropolitan Museum’s Costume Institute. The income from the Costume Institute Benefit, estimated at several million dollars, forms the annual budget of the institute, which is now named after Vogue boss Anna Wintour. Because of the pandemic, the 2020 and 2021 gala had to be canceled in May and was finally made up for in September 2021 with stars like Billie Eilish, Lil Nas X, Sharon Stone, Simone Biles and Lorde.

This also opened the first part of an exhibition on the history of American fashion: “In America: A Lexicon of Fashion”. The second part is to be opened with the gala in May: “In America: An Anthology of Fashion”. Both will be on view until September 2022. The second part of the show will show around 100 items of clothing from the United States from the 19th and 20th centuries. Famous directors such as Sofia Coppola and Martin Scorsese also take part in the production. (dpa)
