WARSAW (dpa-AFX) – Union Chancellor candidate Friedrich Merz is continuing his two-day trip to Eastern Europe in Poland against the backdrop of the ongoing Russian attacks on Ukraine. In the capital Warsaw, after returning from a solidarity visit to Ukraine, the CDU chairman was shown an exhibition from the National Art Museum in the Ukrainian capital Kiev in the Royal Castle, among other things.

Because of the significant damage caused by the Russian attacks in autumn 2022, the management of the museum in Kiev decided to loan part of the art collection to Warsaw for protection and conservation.

Royal Castle symbol of the rebuilt city of Warsaw

The castle is considered a symbol of the city that was largely destroyed in the Second World War and later rebuilt. It was formerly the seat of the kings of Poland. After its destruction in World War II, it was reconstructed and has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1980. Today it is a museum.

Merz is scheduled to meet with Prime Minister Donald Tusk in the afternoon. As in Kiev, continued support for Ukraine, which was attacked by Russia almost three years ago, is likely to be an important issue./bk/DP/mis
