Merlijn Twaalfhoven: ‘Make art yourself, don’t leave it to professionals’

Merlijn Twaalfhoven has an open view on the world. That this can sometimes be a bit naive, becomes apparent when he conquers a place at the conservatory. He expects that studying together a lot to play but nothing could be further from the truth: it is mainly about performing and competing. Now that he stands before us as a trained violinist, he has his instrument with him. But he doesn’t play it. Not yet. Because first he wants to make something clear to us.

Merlin puts the violin for the time being on the pedestal that stands next to him while speaking. He wants us to think about what art can be more than just listening to or looking at something. He asks us what would happen if we awaken the artist in ourselves. A lot, is his expectation. Especially if everyone does. He tells why.

Merlijn is one of our ‘Warriors’: inspiring North Hollanders who have converted their experiences into a positive contribution to society. With this series we give them a platform. Merlin is the last of this season. But Noord-Holland has never been in competition. There are always new fellow provincials who stick out their necks and tackle a social issue. We will be making a new series with them later this year.
