Cologne (dpa) – 1. FC Köln and Jorge Meré go their separate ways. As announced by the Bundesliga soccer team, the 24-year-old central defender is moving to the Mexican club CF América with immediate effect.

“Jorge is a player with great potential. However, in the competition for his position, he never had enough playing time to satisfy him. His aim is to be a regular player,” commented sporting director Jörg Jakobs. The Spaniard Meré moved to Cologne from Sporting Gijón in the summer of 2017 and made a total of 96 appearances for FC.

Because after the transfer of the U21 European champions from 2019 there are only two regular central defenders in the professional squad, the people of Cologne are thinking about alternatives. “For this reason, we are carefully examining the transfer market and are already in contact with candidates who fit our requirements profile,” said Jakobs.

In addition to Meré, Noah Katterbach will also leave Cologne. According to the club, the 20-year-old full-back, who has a contract until 2024, will be loaned to FC Basel on a “long-term basis”. “It will be important for Noah to earn playing time and play at this level to continue his promising path in professional football,” said Jakobs. U21 national player Katterbach was last used mainly in the Cologne regional league team.
