Even the house of the star has decided to offer – for now only on EQS – the solution reminiscent of the F1 models. Launched in 2021 by Tesla who in part had to go back
The steering wheel in cloche has already made the automotive world speak since 2021 when Tesla introduced it as standard on Model S and Model X. Things went differently from what Elon Musk hoped: it became an option, after the return of the traditional model that the house of the house had excluded to review around. But the theme remains topical: if Renault has made one of the Plus of the Scènic Vision, manifest on the future of the house, Lexus adopted the steering wheel in cloche for the new Lexus Rz, in a few months on sale. But now there is also Mercedes-Benz: from next year, the customers of the star will also be able to mount-initially only on EQS, the cloche connected to the steering by-Wirethat is, without a mechanical connection between wheels and steering wheel. The system relies on sensors to read the steering inputs and electric motor to run the wheels: the advantages according to the German company are manifold and above all concern the possibility of calibrating its sensitivity in a more precise way. The steering can in fact become more reactive at low speeds to facilitate parking but also stiffen at higher speeds for greater stability. The main innovation, however, lies in the almost complete reduction of the vibrations transmitted by the disconnected road surfaces, with the result of a more fluid guide.

In combination with the steering rear axle, available on EQE and EQS, the steering By Wire by Wire It also allows you to improve the directionality and the possibilities of customization, as electronics becomes the link for which you choose the response of the steering wheel to the driver’s imputs. The choice to abandon the classic round steering wheel is instead a concession to infotainment, a feature that, according to many brands, will be increasingly decisive in defining the on -board experience. The cloche shape allows a better view of the driver’s display, where multimedia content are projected when the car is firm. Also according to Mercedes, the flattening of the lower part of the steering wheel will facilitate entry and exit from the car and allow a more relaxed posture on the seat, favoring comfort during travel. The new system Steer-by-Wire of Mercedes-Benz has already completed over two million kilometers of test, at the counter and on the road to respect the very high star standards: each wiring is duplicated, to ensure the operation even in the event of a fault and in the unlikely case of a total défaillance, the steering would still remain possible, thanks to the rear axle and the possibility of intervening on the individual wheels with the ESP.
