IG Metall hopes for the preservation of the ArcelorMittal steel mill in Eisenhüttenstadt.

“We will work to ensure that this work has existed. There are many good reasons for it,” said the district manager of the union for Berlin, Brandenburg and Saxony, Jan Otto, the Bundfunk Berlin-Brandenburg (RBB). “There are also many ideas for it.” According to IG Metall, the number of around 2,700 employees is an advantage.

“We don’t have to keep 20,000 employees in employment, but I think a manageable number, which is damn important for Eisenhüttenstadt,” said Otto. “So I believe that the last fair has not yet been sung here.” In June it became known that ArcelorMittal Europe will not continue to pursue plans to switch the steelworks in Bremen and Eisenhüttenstadt to climate -neutral production.

Union relies on the future for Mercedes-Werk

The district manager of IG Metall was also confident about the Mercedes plant in Ludwigsfelde. “I think there is something going on,” said Otto. “We will now also start the talks with the board of Mercedes-Benz. (…) If we are talking again next year, we at least have a basic solution that means that it will continue after 2030.”

The transporter Sprinter is produced in the work. With a view to the Sprinter production in Brandenburg, Mercedes-Benz currently has no plans to close the Ludwigsfelde plant. However, there is partly uncertainty with the union and state government. Mercedes wants to reduce the costs of transporter production. In Ludwigsfelde, a start -up factory – for prototypes or product ideas – has now been established for the electrical platform Van Electric Architecture.

The Mercedes-Benz share temporarily lists 0.31 percent higher at 55.58 euros in Xetra trading.
