Meppeler rapper Spijk Klunder (25) sings song about suicide: ‘We have to break the taboo’

Breaking the taboo about suicide, especially suicide among young people. That’s what rapper Spijk Klunder (25) from Meppel wants to achieve with the song I see you what he made for 113 Suicide Prevention.

113 Suicide prevention approached rapper Nigel Sean, known from The Voice of Holland, among others, for the song. He had an important part in writing the text, but Spijk also wrote and sang a verse. “Nigel thought I was worthy enough to ask,” Spijk says proudly.

But there is another reason that Nigel Sean wanted the Drenthe rapper in his song. “I also had suicidal thoughts for a while. I lived in a very severe depression. So it was an easy choice for Nigel to ask me.”

Spijk’s couplet

And so it happened. The verse Spijk wrote is about someone who feels unseen. “I sing about the fact that I have trouble keeping my head above water, and that I have the feeling that there is no one for me,” Spijk explains the text.

I think I lose every day, but it doesn’t matter
Keep my head above the water and I’ll wait
Count the steps but I don’t walk and I know it
Hold me tall and I pretend to smile

But I’m still here and I know I’m living alone no one around me who gives a fuck
I feel alone, so much pressure around me, there’s no one around me who really understands me

Don’t leave me alone, I’m calling no one to see me

Rising suicide rates

According to Spijk, suicide rates are rising explosively. “That’s really intense,” he says. And that’s why he thinks 113 deserves more attention. “To make it clear that young people, especially young people, today need more and faster help.” With this song, which can be heard on YouTube and Spotify, among others, he hopes to be able to contribute to that.
