Meppel ready for the summer with brand new catering square: ‘It is becoming more and more a city’

With a week of spring to go, Meppel is already completely ready for summer. A new catering plaza has been put into use, which is already attracting many people with the summer weather this week. Entrepreneurs are happy with it. “Meppel is increasingly becoming a city.”

There are no longer any cars on the Groenmarkt. They are now in a new garage. Their place on the market has been taken by patio chairs. That attracts new entrepreneurs to Meppel, which would not have happened in the old situation, says Jordy Landkroon. He recently opened his new restaurant Groen on the Groenmarkt. “A lot of work has been done. This was a parking lot. Gray and gray, with old buildings. An eyesore for me. If it had stayed that way, I certainly wouldn’t have started a catering business here.” When the plans for the Groenmarkt became known, an empty retail property stood out at Landkroon. “With the prospect of this colorful square, we immediately jumped in and rented this property.”

The existing catering industry will also benefit, such as café De Kansel from café owner Maarten van Oosten. He thinks it’s a big transformation. “It has changed 200 percent here. It was small, bare and with broken trees due to many parking incidents,” he laughs. “It really needed development. Now the entire ground has been cleaned up, it has been paved again and new trees have been placed and we have been able to place terraces on it.”
