What are your ambitions for Meppel?
“Being a mayor means a different role. The ambitions are determined by politics. Meppel has ambitions. They want to grow in terms of housing and business parks, but also in the facilities. It must be pleasant to live and work here. Not only now, but also in the future. I am very excited to put their shoulders to the shoulders together with politics and society.”
Have you found a favorite spot so far in the time that you have already met?
“No! There are so many nice places in Meppel and Nijeveen, but also in the outlying areas Broekhuizen, Schiphorst and Rogat. I’m going to discover it all. Look, if you ask my children, the ice cream tent will be the favorite place. We will show ourselves in many different places. Then we will see what will be the most favorite.”
What have you seen, what Almelo doesn’t have?
“The historic city center of Almelo has perished in the 1970s and eighties. Meppel still has that all. He has managed to keep those historic buildings and the canals. That gives the city atmosphere and authenticity. You will not find that in Almelo.”
What does your first month look like? Probably get to know a lot of acquaintances.
“Meeting a lot, but I also immediately fall with the nose in the butter. April is all about 80 years of liberation from Meppel. So there are a lot of activities. I invite everyone to commemorate with us, but also to celebrate freedom. On all social media and the website of the municipality you can find what there is to do around 80 years of freedom.”
