Medvedev goes one lap further in Miami

The Russian Daniil Medvedev has taken the next step towards regaining the lead in the world rankings.

At the Tennis Masters in Miami, the 26-year-old prevailed in his third round match against the Spaniard Pedro Martinez 6: 3, 6: 4 and still needs two wins to replace Novak Djokovic as number one in the world again.

Previously, the number one seeded Medvedev had already beaten two-time tournament winner Andy Murray (Great Britain) 6-4, 6-2 and had a bye in the first round.

In Indian Wells, California, Medvedev was recently eliminated early and lost the lead in the rankings to Djokovic after three weeks.

The Serb does not appear in the two Masters tournaments in the USA because he has not been vaccinated. The 20-time Grand Slam winner and six-time Miami champion does not return to the Tour until the European clay-court season.
