The first round match against an outsider doesn’t go according to plan for Daniil Medvedev. One moment the Russian vents his frustration – and then comments on it.
Tennis star Daniil Medvedev vented his frustration over his own poor performance in the first round match of the Australian Open on a network camera. The Russian, seeded number five, beat the world number 418 in the third set. Kasidit Samrej from Thailand hit the middle of the net, where the small camera was, five times with his racket.
“I have to say that the camera is very, very strong. The racket couldn’t withstand the damage, but the camera could,” said the 2021 US Open winner afterwards: “It broke, but it’s not a single piece fell out of the camera. I was very surprised.”
Medvedev, who became a father for the second time shortly before the start of the tournament, was warned for the incident and will probably have to pay a fine. Medvedev said he hoped the sum wasn’t too high because he didn’t think such a camera would be that expensive.
After winning the first set, Medvedev completely lost the thread and was suddenly behind 1:2 in sets against the wild card holder. An embarrassing exit from the first Grand Slam tournament of the year was looming. But the favorite recovered and won 6:2, 4:6, 3:6, 6:1, 6:2.
