The soft drink tax change entered into force on April 1, 2026. The fast food chain Hesburger said yesterday that the change will affect the prices of meals. Now McDonald’s is also announcing a similar change.
In the future, the taxation of soft drinks depends on their sugar content, and sugar-free sodas are cheaper than sugary ones.
McDonald’s announces on its website that from now on, the price of a meal in McDonald’s restaurants will be calculated according to the price of a sugar-free soft drink. However, customers can choose a sugary soft drink with their meal for an additional fee.
The operation is the same as Hesburger’s.
– The change supports the goal of the Finnish government to steer consumption and production from drinks with a high sugar content to drinks with less sugar, McDonalds’ press release says.
