The French League Association has defended itself against the attacks by the Spanish football league in connection with Kylian Mbappé’s contract extension at Paris Saint-Germain. They want to express their disapproval and incomprehension for the recent attacks on Ligue 1 and one of its clubs, wrote the league chairman Vincent Labrune in a letter to the Spanish league president Javier Tebas, from which the news agency ” AP” quoted on Thursday.
Tebas had described Mbappé’s probably very expensive contract extension at PSG as an “insult” to football. It is scandalous that a club like PSG, which lost more than 220 million euros last season and previously accumulated a deficit of 700 million euros, could now reach such an agreement at a cost of 650 million euros for the staff, said Tebas .
The Spanish league announced that it would lodge a complaint against the contract with the European Football Union (UEFA), the French administrative and tax authorities and the European Union. Mbappé had long been under discussion as a new signing at Real Madrid before the striker extended his contract in Paris until 2025, which expired at the end of the season. The 23-year-old is said to have received a bonus of 300 million euros for this.
“The fact that you publicly and repeatedly take a stand against Ligue 1 on this issue and denigrate our league and our clubs is both unacceptable and patently wrong,” Labrune wrote. For his part, he pointed out that the European Court of Justice had ruled that Real Madrid and FC Barcelona had benefited from illegal state aid and that Spanish top division clubs had spent almost a third more on players than the French league over the past decade.
