Tournament favorite France started the World Cup on Tuesday evening with a 3-1 victory over Senegal. Star player Kylian Mbappé scored twice, bringing his World Cup total to fourteen goals. He is only two goals away from the sixteen goals of record holder Miroslav Klose. Mbappé is already France’s top scorer of all time. He scored a total of 58 times for his country, surpassing Olivier Giroud (57 goals).
In the first half in the enormous New York New Jersey Stadium, the French played very stiffly and did not create a single clearing opportunity against the strongly defending Senegal. Mbappé also barely featured.
Senegal did have the necessary threat and had two good opportunities to score. But Nicolas Jackson hit the post and Ismaïla Sarr shot high from close range in injury time.
Four goals in the second half
In the second half there was much more space and the fast French attackers took full advantage of this. Mbappé opened the scoring in the 66th minute. On a wonderful pass from Olise, he shot the ball past goalkeeper Édouard Mendy.
Substitute Bradley Barcola then made it 2-0 in the final phase after a nice through ball from Adrien Rabiot. Senegal made it 2-1 in injury time thanks to a hard shot from Ibrahim Mbaye, after which Mbappé made the 3-1 final score with an equally hard shot.
Senegal had to make do without fans because they did not receive visas for the United States. Beforehand, national coach Pape Thiaw had said that he would miss them: “They support us and push us forward, especially in difficult moments, but this time we will not have them with us.”
