There is no acute danger to public health at the moment, the governments say, but as a precaution it is advised to avoid the use of ground and surface water.
“At the moment, not everything is clear,” says Mayor Thijssen in the letter to local residents. The origin of the PFAS, how they have spread in the area and what the long -term effects are is now being investigated. The municipality and the province work together with the Drenthe, GGD Drenthe Environment Agency, the Hunze and Aa’s and Noorderzijlvest and Waterbedrijf Groningen Water Boards.
In 2023, PFAS was already measured in the ground and the groundwater at the old fire station. According to the Drenthe Environment Agency, this is caused by extinguishing foam. In response to these results, Groningen Airport Eelde has drawn up a plan for tackling the contamination. This plan is presented to the province of Drenthe.
In addition, the Noorderzijlvest Water Board Pfas found in the Runsloot near Yde, a ditch at the end of the runway. Here too, further research is being done into the cause of the contamination.
The municipality of Tynaarlo will soon be organizing a meeting for local residents of the airport where they can ask questions about PFAS.
