Van Merrienboer resigned last month. The aldermen, on the advice of the municipal council, do not want to issue a permit for the arrival of an asylum seeker center. The municipal council had voted in favor of the arrival of a shelter last year, and according to Van Merrienboer, the municipality would be breaking the law by refusing a permit.
De Jonge had previously asked Van Merrienboer to reconsider his decision to leave, but he stuck to his decision. Van Merrienboer was also absent from Tuesday’s meeting.
The commissioner will consult with the group leaders and aldermen on Thursday. They can then indicate what requirements they believe an acting mayor should meet. De Jonge wants to nominate a candidate on December 16. This should start working early next year.
