Maximum danger due to tornadoes and violent weather in two regions of Catalonia

Civil Protection has activated for the afternoon of this Saturday and tomorrow Sunday the pre-alert of the INUNCAT plan before the forecast of rain in 22 of the 32 Catalan counties. The rain forecast affects above all the Pyrenees, Pre-Pyrenees, northeastern and southern regions of Catalonia, rainfall that can exceed twenty liters per square meter in half an hour. But, specifically, two Gironès regions are on notice due to maximum danger (6/6) of violent weather: Ripollès and Osona.

Thus, confirming the forecasts of the meteorological service Meteocat, the rain began to fall this afternoon, and the service points out that it will last overnight throughout Catalonia, in many cases accompanied by storms and hail, with the exception of ten coastal and pre-coastal regions of Barcelona and Tarragona.

The forecast is that, from six in the afternoon until shortly before 8:00 p.m. they may fall stones with a diameter greater than 2 centimeters, wind gusts greater than 25 m/2 and tornadoes.

Where will it not rain?

The counties where it is not expected to rain are Maresme, Barcelonès, Baix Llobregat, Alt Penedès, Garraf, Baix Penedès, Alt Camp, Conca de Barberà, Tarragonès, Priorat, Baix Camp and Ribera d’Ebre. Tomorrow, Sunday, the rain warning is reduced to northern and eastern regions. They are those of Ripollès, Osona, Garrotxa, Pla de l’Estany, Gironès, Selva, Moianès, Berguedà and Cerdanya. Barcelona and its surroundings could receive some rain on Monday, according to Meteocat.

As regards the temperatures, the maximum will be similar or slightly higher today. Locally, indicates Meteocat, it can exceed 30 degrees in inland points and reach 33 in areas of the West, the Ebro valley and the western Pre-Pyrenees.

High temperatures

Meteocat has informed, in this sense, that the Barcelona radiosonde has captured this morning 18.4 degrees at about 1,500 meters of altitude (850 hectopascals), “a midsummer temperaturemore than ten degrees above the average for this time,” says the meteorological service. It is the second highest value in April at this level in 25 years of data, after the one recorded on April 27, 2012, which was 18.6 degrees.

Yesterday, Friday, the temperature exceeded 30 degrees in the western regions, with 31.7 in Alcarràs. During the day, five of the 114 Meteocat stations scored record high temperatures in a month of April in more than twenty years of data provided by them.

In this scenario of forecast rain but possibility of storms, the Corps of Rural Agents has declared for this Saturday the red level for high fire risk in 13 Catalan counties. These are those of Terra Alta, Ribera d’Ebre, Priorat, Segrià, Garrigues, Noguera, Pla d’Urgell, Urgell, Conca de Barberà, Segarra, Solsonès, Anoia and Bages.
