GP Canada
A fiery battle between the two Mercedes drivers was smothered far too early by a defective car from George Russell. For example, Kimi Antonelli had a huge lead in the World Championship, but Max Verstappen also benefited with his first podium of the year: Although he still had to give up P2 to Lewis Hamilton. Four things that struck your reporter.
Formula 1 reporter Arjan Schouten’s view of:
• Mercedes duel will crackle
• Verstappen benefits from all the misery, but cannot hold off Hamilton
• Drama weekend for McLaren
• Rain not necessary for the spectacle
Mercedes duel is going to crackle
We’ve been waiting all season for that one hit. That clash between the two Mercedes drivers à la Barcelona 2016, when Nico Rosberg and Lewis Hamilton bounced off the track together. Things seemed to be getting serious in Canada.
While George Russell and Kimi Antonelli were already at each other’s throats during the sprint race, things went wild in the first half of the Canadian GP. “We will let them race, hard but fair,” team boss Toto Wolff had promised. And that happened, because on several occasions things went very wrong and the Mercedes pit wall did not intervene.
Russell and Kimi Antonelli, they didn’t avoid each other at all. Then another braking error by the Brit before the hairpin, which the Italian was able to take advantage of. Then the other way around. This is how it went for rounds, in Montreal, where the director didn’t even pay attention to other things on the asphalt for several minutes. Side by side, the tires against each other. Yes, it was crazy, what happened at the front. Until it was suddenly over.
A broken down car belonging to Russell, which suddenly stopped working. He got out with the plague in his body. He threw away a lot of points through no fault of his own. Antonelli, who, freed from Russell, had nothing to fear from anyone, did golden business in the World Cup at the end of a tough weekend, with his fourth victory in a row. “Not the way I would have wanted to win, because it was a nice fight with George. But we will take it as it comes.”
Yet Antonelli provides a unique victory. He is the first driver in the history of the sport to record his first four victories in a row. In addition, it probably won’t really matter to him how he strings together his victories.
Verstappen benefits from all the misery, but cannot hold off Hamilton
He did not get further than P6 in qualifying and seemed unable to do much in the race itself. But that was without the misery of others. Verstappen first saw the McLarens disappear in front of him, because they made a major miscalculation by starting there intermediates.
And then there was Russell’s failure. This is how Verstappen rose from P6 to P2. Which ultimately became P3, because Hamilton could no longer be held off after five rounds of defending at the end of the race.
All in all, it was a welcome boost after a weekend in which he had plenty to complain about. He announced that – if the rules are actually adjusted slightly – he still wants to continue with F1 in 2027. But at Red Bull Racing? Then significant progress must be made there. Because you cannot continue to build impossible new successes on other people’s misery. Although he took his first podium of 2026 in Montreal, he did achieve a podium with quite a story. And of course Verstappen wants more than a supporting role.
Drama weekend for McLaren
Miezeren, that’s what he did in Montreal, on the morning of the race. However, the fact that all the cars around the McLarens were not on intermediates on the grid must have set off some alarms on the pit wall at McLaren. “I don’t know if we are doing this smartly,” Oscar Piastri shouted after the first of three (!) warm-up laps (Arvid Lindblad’s broken car).
No, it wasn’t smart. Lando Norris shot from P3 to the lead, because he had much more grip than both Mercedes at the start. But that benefit was soon over. While Piastri immediately went for slicks after one lap, Norris followed a lap later. The rise of a lost Sunday.
While they thought that the gap with Mercedes had already been considerably reduced in the sprint race, the McLarens threw away a lot in the main race, where they no longer played a significant role from the back. Piastri finished outside the top 10 and Norris even dropped out with a defective car.
Rain not necessary for the spectacle
With a 40 percent chance of rain, the FIA had already sounded the weather alarm. The world once sat wringing its hands before the Canadian GP. But in the end, hardly a drop fell during the race and the asphalt was dry. That does not alter the fact that Canada still offered plenty of chaos, which started before the start with a stalled car by Alexander Albon. A wonderful battle between the Mercedes.
World champion Norris who had to return to the pit lane through the crowd after being stranded. A bizarre safe from Charles Leclerc. Russell’s costly exit. Rubbish on the track and marshals clearing rubbish. A tasty final duel between Hamilton and Verstappen for P2. Yes, the direction sometimes lacked eyes and ears. And so does the viewer.

Antonelli wins!
Kimi Antonelli got four in a row! The Italian takes advantage of his teammate’s engine trouble and makes a big move. Lewis Hamilton beats Max Verstappen and finishes in P2. Verstappen will take third place and his first podium of the year. He probably didn’t expect that this morning. Thanks for following the live blog!
Lap 67/68
Max Verstappen tries to force a mistake from Lewis Hamilton. You can only wonder whether a seven-time world champion will make a mistake. Verstappen is doing everything he canbut falls short for the time being.
Lap 65/68
Due to a mistake, the gap now seems to have been opened by Lewis Hamilton, although of course Max Verstappen never gives up. There is little time to regain second place.
Lap 63/68
Max Verstappen does join Lewis Hamilton. The battle doesn’t seem to be over yet between the two men.
Lap 62/68
What a nice move by Lewis Hamilton! He catches Max Verstappen at a time when the Dutchman does not expect it. It’s a shame for Verstappenbut Hamilton was simply faster.
Lap 60/68
For Max Verstappen it really is survival, because Lewis Hamilton is putting the pressure on. Where is Charles Leclerc in this story? Twenty seconds behind. The first podium of the year is therefore coming closer for Verstappen.
Lap 58/68
Max Verstappen survives another lap and he also owes this to laggard Valtteri Bottas. Verstappen was also allowed to press the boost button and that resulted in: no attack from Lewis Hamilton.
Lap 57/68
There are the first pinpricks from Lewis Hamilton, who forces Max Verstappen to take a defensive action. The Dutchman survives this first attempt.
Lap 56/68
Lewis Hamilton is within a second of Max Verstappen and can now really hunt for the Red Bull Racing driver. Will Verstappen keep this up? or will he settle for third place?
Lap 55/68
Charles Leclerc makes a strange mistake. The Monegasque goes almost full into the wall, but just keeps his car on track.
Lap 53/68
Another Virtual Safety Car. This is not so easy to explain. In any case, it is unclear what exactly is going on on the track.
Lap 51/68
While Lewis Hamilton is kicking ass, Charles Leclerc is not at all happy. The driver receives Hamilton’s times. “I only want to hear you when it’s the last round. Or if it is absolutely necessary.” A quite polite manner to keep someone quiet.
Lap 49/68
There is simply no more in the Red Bull Racing car. Max Verstappen drives tight lap times, but cannot pull away from Lewis Hamilton. The Ferrari driver also seems to be able to go faster every lap. ,,We can get him!“, says the Briton over the on-board radio.
Lap 47/68
A new battle between Max Verstappen and Lewis Hamilton seems inevitable. The seven-time world champion is consistently faster than his old title rival. The difference is now only three seconds.
Lap 46/68
The Virtual Safety Car is used by the FIA. It probably has something to do with the mess Sergio Pérez left behind. A moment for Max Verstappen to catch his breath.
Lap 45/68
Toto Wolff jumped out from behind his computer to catch his driver. George Russell doesn’t seem to be interested in the interaction and gives his team boss a cold hand. There will also be some anger with Isack Hadjar: the Red Bull Racing driver gets a ten second time penalty for the incident with Charles Leclerc.
Lap 42/68
The Ferrari car simply goes really well on the mediums, especially in the hands of Lewis Hamilton. The difference with Max Verstappen has been reduced to four seconds. In the meantime we have one next dropout: Sergio Pérez. The Mexican’s front suspension has broken off.
Lap 41/68
Max Verstappen briefly gains two seconds over Kimi Antonelli. This is due to former teammate Sergio Pérez, who drives his slower Cadillac constitutes an obstacle for the leader in the race.
Lap 40/68
Now Isack Hadjar makes a mistake in Turn 10 and Charles Leclerc benefits from it. The Monegasque now moves to fourth place. Meanwhile, Lando Norris also drops out. The Mercedes engine shows some cracks.
Lap 38/68
Max Verstappen has understood the assignment and goes a little faster on the last lap. Lewis Hamilton has his bit between his teeth, because he sets the fastest lap time of the race down.
