The discussions about the future of Max Verstappen and a possible departure from Formula 1 continue. Now the Dutchman once again fueled the rumors about an early end to his time in the premier motorsport class.
Since the start of the season and the introduction of the new rules in Formula 1, there has been great dissatisfaction among the four-time world champion. And Verstappen never tires of expressing this dissatisfaction again and again. For this reason alone, the Red Bull driver’s retirement has been discussed for months.
Since Verstappen was not alone in his criticism of the “new” Formula 1, a reaction has already been made. The proportion of electric drive should be reduced again, which should shift energy management more towards the “old” Formula 1.
However, it is still unclear when these rules will be enforced. It is still unclear that Verstappen and Co. will have to be patient until 2028. When asked about this in the Montreal paddock, the Dutchman said: “If it stays like this, it will be a long next year and I don’t want that.”
When asked, the four-time world champion specified: “If it stays like this, then we’ll see. I can’t cope with that mentally, really not.”
He also made it clear: A Formula 1 break is out of the question for him. If he were to leave the sport, it would be a final decision. “There are many other things that are fun,” was the clear statement.
Reconciliatory ending?
However, Verstappen himself backtracked during the conversation – in the hope that the changes could come into effect as early as 2027. “We should focus on the positive aspects. I think at the moment it looks like these changes will be implemented next year. And of course some people who may have a small advantage at the moment will try to make the whole thing more difficult. But if the FIA and also the FOM are determined, they just have to do it,” Verstappen demanded.
These statements are much more in line with what Verstappen said in a recent interview with the Dutch newspaper De Telegraaf. There the Dutchman announced that he definitely wanted to continue racing in the premier class in 2027. “Unless really crazy things happen, but I don’t assume that will happen,” explained Verstappen and stated unequivocally: “I can confirm that I will stay in Formula 1.”
Whatever Verstappen decides in the end, what is certain is that there will continue to be a lot to talk about until then.
