The revelation that Matthijs van Nieuwkerk has behaved like a TV executioner for years without anyone intervening is extremely exciting. Celebrities such as Patty Brard are already calling for his farewell to television. In any case, his TV recordings of today are off; the presenter has canceled it.

Matthew cancels

Matthijs was supposed to record the Top2000 Quiz today, but that has been cancelled. “After the publication of the Volkskrant article and the dynamics that this generates, we have to conclude that today is not the right day to record a festive quiz,” says a spokesman for the NTR.

The press officer continues in the AD: “That is why we have decided not to allow the recordings of the Top2000 Quiz to continue. This decision was made in consultation with Matthijs and the NPO.”

NTR supports him

It seems that this decision mainly comes from Matthijs, because the NTR was in the front earlier this morning to express their support for the presenter. The broadcaster announced that the recordings of all Top 2000 programs will continue.

The Top 2000 à Go-Go team “does not recognize” Matthijs’s behavior as described by de Volkskrant, the broadcaster said. “Our production team has enjoyed working with Matthijs in recent years and in good relations.”

A little too eager

That reaction from the NTR was a bit too eager, says former NPO 1 boss Ton F. van Dijk. He says: “Typical first reflex. But television is emotion and the presenter is a figurehead. Perhaps it is better to pause and think about all the consequences?”

A few hours later, things are very different. Will the Top 2000 programming still take place? The NTR: “The article was published last night. Any consequences will have to be clarified in the near future.”

In therapy?

Matthijs will undoubtedly think about a lot of things today. In response to the Volkskrant yesterday, he could not even answer the question whether he is actually in the right mind.

The presenter: “The question that also arises from the piece is whether I was actually right in my head. I honestly don’t know. Making a talk show every day for years with this drift and under great expectations may be madness. It won’t be good for everything.”
